California Highway Pavement Healthiest in 10 years

Date:              March 19, 2014
District:         Headquarters - Sacramento
Contact:        Tamie McGowen
Phone:          (916) 657-5060

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

California Highway Pavement Healthiest in 10 years

SACRAMENTO – Caltrans has announced that the condition of the pavement on California’s highways is at its healthiest level in more than a decade, according to the recently released 2013 State of the Pavement Report.

“It’s important to maintain and preserve the existing transportation system first and foremost before making other improvements,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “This improvement in our pavement proves that we are committed to doing just that.”

Caltrans reported that the percent of healthy pavement on the state highway system increased from 75 to 84 percent from 2011 to 2013 – an increase of 4,500 lane miles of smoother pavement.

Caltrans maintains its aging state highway system even while it carries nearly 35 million vehicles. Each year, the department surveys the condition of its pavement to determine how much of the system needs maintenance.

Annual maintenance needs far outpace dependable funding, but Caltrans uses high-tech strategies, recycling, and innovative treatments to make pavement last longer, to stretch every dollar and to preserve the environment. Cold-in-place recycling allows Caltrans to recycle and reprocess existing pavement without leaving the construction site. That method, and using rubberized hot-mix asphalt and warm-mix asphalt, has reduced more than 61,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Caltrans used one-time funds from the 2006 Proposition 1B transportation bond and the 2009 Recovery Act to help pay for nearly $4 billion in pavement projects on nearly 18,000 lane miles in the last four years. Continued improvement of pavement health is contingent on a stable funding source for road rehabilitation and repair.

Caltrans reported on pavement health and other road maintenance conditions earlier this year in its publication Mile Marker, a plain language and clearly written report on how Caltrans is performing and the current state of the California transportation system. Mile Marker is available online at http://www.dot.ca.gov/

LITTER CLEAN-UP AND ENFORCEMENT DAY

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

“Don’t Trash California”

Caltrans and CHP increase awareness on eve of spring cleaning season

(OAKLAND)- Caltrans and the CHP are working to increase awareness of litter clean-up and enforcement efforts on Wednesday, March 19th, 2014, the eve of this year’s official start of springtime.

And with the spring equinox and Earth Day events fast approaching, highway message signs throughout the Bay Area will remind everyone to: “Don’t Trash California”.

As part of Wednesday’s joint agency effort, Caltrans maintenance crews throughout the Bay Area will focus on cleaning-up litter left alongside highways. CHP will focus on vehicle enforcement and reminds drivers that law enforcement will be watching for litter violations.

Litter affects everyone’s safety and costs taxpayers a lot of money. In 2012, Caltrans spent about $50 million statewide cleaning up litter and collecting enough trash to fill more than 8,000 garbage trucks.

During Wednesday’s event, media ride-along opportunities are available with CHP and Caltrans crews at these and other litter pick-up locations between 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.:

San Jose-Los Gatos
Northbound and Southbound Highway 101 between McKee Road and Alum Rock, San Jose
Southbound I-280 between Lark Avenue and Main Street, Los Gatos

San Francisco
Northbound and Southbound U.S. Highway 101 between Sierra Point and Candlestick

Oakland-Emeryville-Berkeley
Eastbound I-80 between the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza and Powell Street, Oakland-Emeryville
Westbound I-80 between Gilman Street and Ashby Avenue, Berkeley

Fairfield-Benicia-San Rafael
Northbound and southbound I-680 between Lake Herman Road and I-80, Benicia-Fairfield
Northbound and southbound Highway 101-between N. San Pedro and Hwy 37, San Rafael

Community members can also “Adopt A Highway” through the Caltrans Adopt A Highway Program.

For information, call 1-866-ADOPT-A-HWY or click onto: http://adopt-a-highway.dot.ca.gov/

Litter Clean-Up and Enforcement Day started as a conversation more than 10 years ago between Caltrans, CHP and local cities to raise awareness and help keep our highways clean throughout the Bay Area.

2013 marked the 10th anniversary year of the Litter Clean-Up event.

Diana McDermott at CHP for interviews, photo opportunities, and media ride-along opportunities.
