Full Overnight Closures-Major Maintenance

Week of May 11th

SOLANO and SONOMA COUNTIES – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform major maintenance and paving on Highway 37 between Highway 29 and Highway 121 starting Sunday, May 11th.  

Full Overnight Highway Closures-Start Sunday, May 11th
To ensure worker and public safety, five nights of full highway closures on Highway 37 between Highway 29 and Highway 121, between Solano and Sonoma counties are scheduled.

The full highway closures are scheduled to start on Sunday night, May 11th until the morning of Friday, May 16th. Closures with detours will start each night, Sunday through Thursday at 9 p.m., and conclude the following mornings at 5 a.m. All work is weather permitting.

Westbound Highway 37-Detour-Starts at Highway 37/ Highway 29 Interchange  
During the overnight highway closures, motorists should use northbound Highway 29, then southbound Highway 121, and re-enter Highway 37 at the Highway 121/Highway 37 interchange.

Eastbound Highway 37-Detour-Starts at Highway 37/ Highway 121 Interchange Motorists should use northbound Highway 121, then southbound Highway 29, then southbound Highway 29, then re-enter eastbound Highway 37. 

Local access is available for residents and emergency vehicles only. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will help direct motorists. Caltrans will also install changeable message signs. Motorists should allow for extra travel time.

I-280 Bridge Hinge Replacement Project 104-Hours (4 Days-8-Hours) Road Closure Planned for Memorial Day Holiday Weekend

Interstate 280 Bridge Hinge Replacement Project
104-Hours (4 Days-8-Hours) Road Closure Planned for Memorial Day Holiday Weekend

San Francisco – Construction has started for a bridge hinge replacement project on Interstate 280 near Cesar Chavez Street.  During three extended-holiday weekends, the California Department of Transportation will close I-280 in order to replace one bridge hinge on southbound I-280 and three bridge hinges on northbound I-280.

The first closure is scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend. Southbound I-280 will be fully closed between downtown San Francisco and the Pennsylvania Avenue on-ramp.

Full southbound closure Begins: 9 p.m. Thursday evening, May 22
Full southbound closure Ends: 5 a.m., Tuesday morning, May 27.

Southbound on-ramp closures include:
  • Mariposa Street/18th Street on-ramp
  • 6th Street/Brannan on-ramp
  • King Street on-ramp

Detour: In general, southbound Interstate 280 traffic will detour to U.S. 101.
Note: northbound I-280 will remain open over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend.

Additional closures are planned for
  • 4th of July Holiday Weekend (Thursday, July 3 – Tuesday, July 8)
  • Labor Day Holiday Weekend (Thursday, August 28 – September 2)

Sonoma County –Caltrans has scheduled pavement repair on State Route (SR) 121, from the Napa County/Sonoma County line to Sonoma Green Acres/Scarafoni Road. There will be flaggers and one-way traffic control, Wednesday night, April 23, through Friday night, April 25, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Please drive cautiously through the construction zone, leave a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you, and “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

Caltrans and CHP increase awareness as part of Earth Day week-long activities


(OAKLAND)- Caltrans and the CHP are teaming-up to increase awareness of litter clean-up and enforcement efforts on Thursday, April 24th, 2014, as part of the many Earth Day events happening throughout the Bay Area this week.  

As a preview to Thursday’s Caltrans-CHP Litter Clean-Up and Enforcement Day, motorists will see “Don’t Trash California” litter bags stacked along Bay Area highways starting on Earth Day, April 22nd and through Litter Enforcement Day on April 24th.  CHP Commercial Mobile Road Enforcement units will also focus on litter enforcement, and educating drivers to cover their loads on April 233d.

Then on Thursday, April 24th, Bay Area highway message signs will remind everyone to: “Don’t Trash California”. Caltrans will also focus on cleaning-up litter left alongside our highways.

In 2013, Caltrans spent about $62 million statewide cleaning up litter and collecting more 155,000 cubic yards of trash enough to fill more than 1,000 swimming pools with 30,000 gallons of water in each. During Thursday’s event, media ride-along opportunities are available with CHP and Caltrans at these and other litter pick-up locations between 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.:

State Route 12 from Potato slough in san joaquin county
to the san Joaquin/Sacramento County Line

San Joaquin County The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform one-way traffic control on State Route 12 (SR-12) from Potato Slough to the San Joaquin/Sacramento County line for paving.

Work will begin on Monday, April 21, 2014, through Friday, April 25, 2014, from 7:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m.

Motorists should expect 20 minute delays.  Alternate routes should be taken whenever possible.

Construction is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment and/ or materials, and construction related issues.

This work is part of the $47 million Bouldin Island Rehabilitation Project.  This project will construct a new roadway to replace the existing SR-12 between the Potato Slough and the Mokelumne River Bridges. The project will improve safety by constructing a concrete median barrier with five-foot inside shoulders and eight-foot outside shoulders with rumble strips and is scheduled for completion in 2017.

Lane Closures Tonight for Demolition, 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Petaluma, Sonoma County –Caltrans has scheduled lane closures for the Old Redwood Highway Interchange Improvement project in Petaluma.

Bridge Demolition, Friday Night / Saturday Morning, April 18 - 19
Caltrans will be working in the median of the freeway tonight to complete demolition of the Old Redwood Highway bridge. Motorists travelling northbound or southbound on U.S. 101 should expect additional travel time to reach their destination.

  • Two northbound lanes and two southbound lanes will be closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.  One lane will remain open in each direction.

  • Demolition is a noisy activity, and residents and businesses may hear additional noise during this activity.

If this work is delayed due to weather conditions, it will be rescheduled for a later time. Please drive cautiously through the construction zone and leave a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.  Please remember to Slow for the Cone Zone. The California Highway Patrol will be on site during these closures.

NAPA COUNTY– The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform repairs to the support wall on the Highway 128-Hopper Slough Bridge in Napa County. The bridge is located on Highway 128 (also known as Rutherford Road) between Yountville and Calistoga.

To ensure public and worker safety, a full bridge closure is scheduled to go into effect starting Monday, May 5th at 12:01 a.m. until Friday, May 16th. Caltrans will notify the public once additional closure details are available and also when details about the bridge’s reopening are available.

During the bridge closure, motorists heading onto the Highway 128-Hopper Slough Bridge will need to use detours on nearby Highway 29, the Silverado Trail, and Zinfandel Lane.

Westbound Interstate 80 Ramp Meter Project-Vacaville Watch For Work at Merchant Street-On-Ramp


SOLANO COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Solano Transportation Authority (STA), and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) are continuing work on the next phase of ramp meter activation in Solano County on westbound Interstate-80 in Vacaville.

As part of the work, Caltrans is working closely with its project partners and PG&E to relocate a natural gas pipeline at the Merchant Street on-ramp onto westbound I-80. Caltrans does not anticipate any ramp closures the week of April 17th. However, the on-ramp may be closed during some overnights in the month of May.

Caltrans will contact the public once additional details are available regarding overnight ramp closures and project completion dates. Crews anticipate completing the work at the Merchant Street on-ramp no later than mid-June.

In addition to relocating the gas line, the work involves adding traffic metering lights, and repaving the roadway.

Motorists should expect delays and plan for extra travel time. All work is weather permitting.

SOLANO COUNTY– The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will temporarily suspend service of the Real McCoy II Ferry to perform routine preventive maintenance. The Real McCoy II is scheduled to be closed Wednesday, April 16th             at 10 p.m. until the morning of Thursday, April 17th at 4 a.m. All work is weather permitting.
The Real McCoy II also known as the Cache Slough Ferry, provides regular service on State Route 84 between Ryer Island and the city of Rio Vista in Solano County.
The delta region ferry normally runs scheduled crossings every 20 minutes, on the hour, 20 minutes after the hour, and 40 minutes after the hour.

During Wednesday’s service interruption, motorists are advised to use Highway 160 and the J-Mack Ferry along Highway 220.

During three extended-holiday weekends, the California Department of will close northbound or southbound I-280 in order to replace one bridge hinge on southbound I-280 and three bridge hinges on northbound I-280.

The first closure is scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend. Southbound I-280 will be closed between 5th Street in downtown San Francisco and the U.S. 101 interchange. The closure will begin 9 p.m. Thursday evening, May 22, and continue until 5 a.m., Tuesday morning, May 27. During this extensive closure, the southbound on-ramps from Mariposa Street/18th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue will also be closed. SOLANO COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform four consecutive nights of paving work on Highway 12 between Walters Road in Suisun City and Highway 113 starting on Sunday, April 13th at 8:30 p.m. Crews will repair and repave the roadway which has deteriorated over time.

The work is scheduled to start Sunday, April 13th at 8:30 p.m. and be completed the morning of Thursday, April 17th at 5 a.m. Work will start each day Sunday through Wednesday at 8 p.m. and conclude at 5 a.m. the following mornings. All work is weather permitting. 
To ensure public and worker safety, one-way traffic controls will be in effect on Highway 12 between Walters Road and Highway 113. The work will be done on westbound Highway 12. However, crews will alternate lane closures in both westbound and eastbound directions. This will allow one lane on the highway to remain open during the work.
Flaggers with a pilot car will help direct traffic. Caltrans will also install portable message signs alerting drivers. Motorists should expect delays and allow for extra travel time.

San Mateo County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled the following lane closures for the week of April 7, 2014, through April 13, 2014 as part of the Route 82 (El Camino Real) Smart Corridor project.

Caltrans crews will install an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) system that provides traffic management tools to manage traffic on local streets and State Route 82. Improvements include, a fiber optic communication system, interconnection of local and State traffic signals, trailblazer signs, message signs, vehicle detection systems and fixed cameras. This system will run from the City of San Bruno to Redwood City.

Partners include: (C/CAG) City and County of Associated Governments of San Mateo County, US Department of Transportation-Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the following Cities, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City.

Construction is expected to be completed in October, 2014. (Weather Permitting)
