FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CALTRANS PARTNERS WITH THE CONTRA COSTA TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY TO IMPROVE MOBILITY IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) announced today that construction has begun for the Interstate 680 Auxiliary Lanes Improvement Project in Danville and San Ramon.

I-680 will be widened approximately 12-feet in both the northbound and southbound directions between Sycamore Valley Road and Crow Canyon Road. The widening will occur on the outside of the freeway, in the shoulder area. To accommodate this widening and not impact adjacent properties, retaining walls will be constructed in areas where steep slopes exist. Lanes will be shifted to the median and the roadway restriped so that work can take place on the shoulder behind K-rail concrete barriers.

In order to shift lanes, place K-rail, and perform other construction activities, there will be various lane closures for the next few weeks, Monday night through Thursday night, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday night from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Other activities will take place during the day, behind the K-rail.

Full closures of the northbound I-680 on-ramp at Crow Canyon Road and the northbound I-680 off-ramp at Sycamore Valley Road are scheduled for Thursday night, March 28, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. The southbound I-680 on-ramp at Sycamore Valley Road is scheduled to be closed Tuesday night, April 2, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Please note that work is weather dependent.  If work is cancelled due to weather conditions, it will be rescheduled.

“Caltrans is committed to improving mobility throughout California,” said Caltrans District 4 Director Bijan Sartipi. “With this project we continue our successful partnership with the Contra Costa Transportation Authority.”

The project includes reconstruction of existing soundwalls on northbound I-680 between Fostoria Way and Sycamore Valley Road. A new soundwall will be constructed on southbound I-680, approximately 600 feet north of the Greenbrook overcrossing and will extend for 1500 feet to the north. Once roadway construction is complete, landscaping will be replanted along the entire project area.

"This project serves as a strong validation for Contra Costa County voters, who passed Measure J in 2004 to pay for transportation improvements in the county,” said Randell Iwasaki, Executive Director for the Authority.

The first segment of the I-680 Auxiliary Lanes Improvement Project was constructed and opened to traffic in 2006, and created auxiliary lanes in the Town of Danville between Diablo Road and Sycamore Valley Road. In 2007, auxiliary lanes were completed in the City of San Ramon between Crow Canyon Road and Bollinger Canyon Road. This final segment of auxiliary is expected to open to traffic in 2014. Earlier this year, trees were removed from the project area in both northbound and southbound directions to facilitate construction.

The contract was awarded to Bay Cities Paving & Grading, Inc/Myers J.V.  With approximately 15 subcontractors and ten vendors, 100 jobs in Contra Costa County have been created as a result of this project.

For more information about this project, please visit CCTA’s website at http://www.ccta.net, or for information about other State projects in the Bay Area, please visit the Caltrans District 4 website at http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

REMOVAL CONSTRUCTION TO REMOVE LEANING OR DEAD TREES ALONG HWY 13 NORTHBOUND ROADWAY BEGINS NEXT MONDAY

ALAMEDA COUNTY To insure safety of freeway commuters, Caltrans will conduct tree removal construction at 9 a.m., Monday, March 18, 2013 to remove select trees along northbound State Route (SR) -13.

No lane closures are scheduled at this time.

The removal construction is crucial to maintain roadway operations. All of the trees identified for removal are leaning, dead and/or diseased. Removal will occur at various points along the northbound stretch of SR-13 between Redwood Road and the Moraga Avenue onramp.

Portable Changeable Message Signs (PCMS) may be used along the route to notify motorists of all removal construction activities. Motorists are reminded to stay away from removal construction sites and crews during operations, which may involve large cranes and trucks, and grinding equipment.

Motorists are strongly urged to drive cautiously through this construction zone and, in the event of inclement weather, leave a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you. Caltrans appreciates your patience as we work to improve the highways. Please remember to Slow for the Cone Zone.
