TRAFFIC SWITCH FOR NEW I-880 N/B BRIDGE AT 5TH AVENUE THIS WEEKEND

State of California Department of Transportation

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

Date: February 28, 2013
District: 4 Alameda County
Contact: Gregory Townsend, Public Information Officer
Phone: 510/286-6115
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRAFFIC SWITCH FOR NEW I-880 N/B BRIDGE AT 5TH AVENUE THIS WEEKEND

ALAMEDA COUNTY Caltrans will initiate an early morning traffic switch Sunday morning, March 3, 2013, to divert motorists traveling on the old northbound (N/B) Interstate 880 (I-880) bridge structure onto the newly-completed bridge structure.

Lane closures along I-880 will begin Saturday night, March 2, 2013 at 11 p.m. to minimize normal traffic delays that could occur at the (estimated) conclusion of Saturday night’s Golden State Warriors game at the Oracle Arena.

Once the switch is completed by 9 a.m. Sunday morning (March 3), motorists who wish to use the Oak Street exit will need to use the 5th Avenue/Embarcadero exit. Oak Street motorists will continue northbound on old I-880 bridge to reach Oak Street.

IMPORTANT: Northbound I-880 motorists exiting Oak Street will need to exit I-880 sooner, since the Oak Street exit traffic will be temporarily shifted south to exit the freeway with the 5th Avenue/Embarcadero exit.

This detour will last approximately 3 weeks until construction for the transition from the new bridge to the Oak Street exit is complete. Portable Changeable Message Signs (PCMS) will be used along the construction zone to notify motorists of all changes.

This traffic switch will allow construction crews to safely conduct demolition activities of the existing northbound bridge and to complete final retrofit construction of 5th Avenue Bridge.

Motorists should are reminded to please be alert for workers and "Slow for the Cone
Zone. Caltrans appreciates your patience as we work to improve the highways.
