Construction Begins for College Avenue Widening Project at U.S. 101
Weeknight Road Closures to Begin Wednesday Night, May 21

Santa Rosa –Caltrans will begin work this week to relocate sewer and water lines on College Avenue, between Cleveland Avenue and Morgan Street.

On Wednesday night, May 21, Caltrans will close College Avenue between Cleveland Avenue and the Interchange.  Vehicles will be able to reach the ARCO Gas Station and Subway restaurant adjacent to the freeway on-ramp, but through traffic will not be allowed between the southbound U.S. 101 freeway on-ramp/off-ramp and Cleveland Avenue.

  • Standard closure hours of College Avenue for utility relocation:
Monday – Friday, 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

  • Detour: Morgan Street to 9th Street to Cleveland Avenue.

  • No closures are scheduled for Friday night, May 23.

This project will widen College Avenue at US 101 between Cleveland Avenue to the west and Morgan Avenues to the east of the interchange. Improvements include new bicycle lanes and pedestrian sidewalks in either direction, a second left-turn lane for eastbound College Avenue approach to the northbound US 101 on-ramp, and an extension of the westbound College Avenue to northbound Cleveland Avenue right-turn lane that will start at Morgan Avenue. New replacement traffic signals within project limits will provide further enhancement to the interchange.

When completed, there will be reduced congestion, improved safety, enhanced pedestrian and bicycle access, and improved traffic flow at the U.S. 101/College Avenue Interchange.

U.S. 101 Petaluma River Bridge Construction
Girder Installation Rescheduled

Petaluma, Sonoma County – Caltrans has rescheduled full closures of southbound U.S. 101 at the Petaluma Bridge in order to install girders for a new bridge being built between the current northbound and southbound bridges. When the crane is in operation over the river, there will be brief closures for river traffic on Tuesday night, June 10. Petaluma Boulevard South will be closed Wednesday night, June 11 and Friday night, June 13.

Southbound U.S. 101 Closure Schedule
  • Tuesday night, May 27 – Thursday night, May 29 (3 nights)
    10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

  • Friday night, May 30
    11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • Crane will be moved to south side of the Petaluma River during week of June 2.

  • Monday night, June 9
10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

  • Tuesday night, June 10 – River traffic will have flagger.
10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

  • Wednesday night, June 11 and Thursday night, June 12
    10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

  • Friday  night, June 13
11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • Detour: southbound U.S. 101 traffic will exit at State Route 116/Lakeville Highway, turn left on Lakeville Highway, continue to State Route 37, and turn right to return to U.S. 101 (detour is approximately 17 miles, or 20 minutes).

Petaluma Boulevard South Closures at U.S. 101
  • Wednesday night, June 11
    9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

  • Friday night, June 13
10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • Detour: Route will vary depending on location. Please follow detour signs.

Bridge Demolition and Full Freeway Closure on Saturday Night, March 22

Petaluma, Sonoma County –Caltrans has scheduled lane and ramp closures for the Old Redwood Highway Interchange Improvement project in Petaluma.

Bridge Demolition, Saturday Night / Sunday Morning, March 22 - 23
There will be a full freeway closure of U.S. 101 in the northbound and southbound directions on Saturday night / Sunday morning, March 22 - 23, for bridge demolition.

  • Northbound U.S. 101 will be closed at the Old Redwood Highway Interchange Saturday night, March 22, from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday morning, March 23. Detour: Exit at Old Redwood Highway, turn right, continue to State Route 116/Gravenstein Highway in Cotati, and return to northbound U.S. 101.

  • Southbound U.S. 101 will be closed at Old Redwood Highway Interchange from 11 p.m. Saturday night, March 22, from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday morning, March 23. Detour: Exit at Petaluma Boulevard N, turn right and continue to E. Washington Street. Turn left on E. Washington Street and continue to southbound U.S. 101.

  • Prior to the full closure hours, there will be one-lane freeway closures in the northbound and southbound directions from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday night.

  • After the full closure hours, there will be one-lane freeway closures in the northbound and southbound directions from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday morning.

  • The northbound and southbound loop on-ramps will be closed during bridge demolition.

  • Demolition is a noisy activity, and residents and businesses may experience additional noise during this activity.

Bridge Demolition for Southbound Side
Caltrans will also have a full closure of southbound U.S. 101 at Redwood Highway North/Petaluma Boulevard North.  The work is expected to take place Saturday night, March 29, from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. This work will be scheduled when favorable weather conditions can be confirmed.

If this work is delayed due to weather conditions, it will be rescheduled for a later time. Please drive cautiously through the construction zone and leave a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.  Please remember to Slow for the Cone Zone. The California Highway Patrol will be on site during these closures.

Additional Information
Motorists are adjusting to the new alignment of lanes at the Old Redwood Highway interchange.  However, Caltrans would like to remind drivers not to block intersections.  Please wait until the roadway is clear ahead of you before driving through an intersection. Drivers who block an intersection slow down the flow of traffic for everybody.

Long Term On-Ramp Closures Scheduled for Tuesday night, February 25
Bridge Demolition and Full Freeway Closure Planned for March 2014


Petaluma, Sonoma County –Caltrans has scheduled lane and ramp closures for the Old Redwood Highway Interchange project in Petaluma.

  • Caltrans will close the southbound U.S. 101 loop on-ramp and southbound U.S. 101 off-ramp Thursday night, February 20, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Friday night, February 21, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and Monday night, February 24, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. The southbound diagonal on-ramp to U.S. 101 will remain open during this work.

  • Tuesday night, February 25, Caltrans will switch traffic to the new bridge at Old Redwood Highway/Petaluma Boulevard North Interchange and close the old bridge.  During this work, Petaluma Boulevard North/ Old Redwood Highway North will be closed at U.S. 101, and all ramps at the interchange will be closed from 10 p.m. Tuesday night to 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.

  • There will be various lane closures on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 during the closure hours noted above.  At least one lane will remain open in each direction during this work.

Northbound and Southbound U.S. 101 Ramp Closure
When this new bridge is opened, the northbound diagonal on-ramp from Old Redwood Highway, and the southbound diagonal on-ramp from Petaluma Boulevard North will be closed for approximately four to six months.  This closure is necessary to build a new on-ramp that will connect to the realigned roadway.
  • During the long-term on-ramp closures, westbound traffic on Old Redwood Highway will turn left at a temporary traffic signal and use the existing northbound U.S. 101 loop on-ramp.
  • Westbound traffic from Old Redwood Highway will continue to use the existing loop on-ramp to travel to southbound U.S. 101.
  • Eastbound traffic on Petaluma Blvd. North will turn left at a traffic signal and use the existing northbound U.S. 101 loop on-ramp.
  • Eastbound traffic will use the existing loop on-ramp to travel north on U.S. 101.
  • One lane will remain open in each direction on the bridge for through traffic.
  • This ramp closure is expected to cause delays and additional time should be allowed when traveling through the area.

Bridge Demolition
Demolition of the old bridge will require full freeway closures in March 2014. A traffic advisory will be released as soon as the work is scheduled.

Storm Drain Inspection on Northbound U.S. 101 in San Jose

Santa Clara County - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will inspect underground storm drains on northbound U.S. 101 for the next four consecutive nights (except Saturday and Sunday). This work will require the closing of no more than two lanes out of five from 13th Street to the northbound I-880 connector. Work will be conducted during the evening from 9:00 p.m. to no later than 5:00 a.m. the following day. In addition, there will be ramp and connector closures as follows:

Ramp Closure: 13th Street on-ramp to northbound U.S.101.

Northbound Detour: Take northbound 13th Street / Oakland Road to westbound Commercial Street / Old Bayshore Highway to the northbound U.S.101 on-ramp.

Southbound Detour: Take southbound 13th Street / Oakland Road to westbound East Hedding Street, then turn right onto 10th Street and turn left onto Old Bayshore Highway to northbound U.S. 101 on-ramp

Connector Closed:  I-880 northbound connector closure

Detour:  Continue to northbound U.S. 101 and take the following loop ramps to southbound I-880 to southbound U.S. 101 connector to northbound I-880.
  
Advance warning changeable message signs and detour signs are in place to assist motorists traveling in the area. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area and please “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

U.S. 101 / State Route 116 Construction in Petaluma
Full Closures Planned at SR 116 and U.S. 101 Kastania Overcrossing
Traffic Shift Rescheduled for Northbound U.S. 101 on Tuesday Night, December 17

Petaluma, Sonoma County – Construction continues for the U.S. 101/State Route 116 Interchange Project and the U.S. 101 Petaluma Boulevard South Interchange Project.

Full Closures of State Route 116 at U.S. 101
  • State Route 116 will be closed Thursday night, December 12, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday night, December 13, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Detour: During this closure, traffic may detour to Caulfield Lane and S. McDowell Boulevard.

  • Demolition of the northbound U.S. 101 bridge structure is scheduled for later in the month.  This demolition will also require a full closure of SR 116. More details regarding closure hours and detours will be forthcoming once the plan is fully established.

Traffic Shift for Northbound U.S. 101 Rescheduled
Tuesday night, December 17, Caltrans has scheduled a traffic shift for northbound U.S. 101 at the State Route 116 interchange.  Southbound U.S. 101 traffic will be shifted to the right shoulder. This shift will allow northbound traffic to be shifted to the left across the median to the southbound bridge. There will be two northbound lanes and two southbound lanes sharing the same bridge. After passing over SR 116, northbound traffic will shift to the right and return to the original roadway. This traffic shift will remain in effect until summer or fall of 2014 while the old northbound bridge over SR 116 is removed and replaced with a new bridge.

Northbound and southbound lanes will be separated by a concrete barrier, and the speed limit in the construction zone will reduced to 45 MPH. It is essential for the safety of motorists and construction workers that this speed limit is observed. This speed limit will be enforced by the California Highway Patrol. 

U.S. 101 Ramp Closures
  • The northbound U.S. 101 off-ramp to SR 116 will be closed Tuesday night, December 17, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • The northbound U.S. 101 on-ramp from SR 116 will be closed Tuesday night, December 10, and Wednesday night, December 11, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Full Closure of U.S. 101 at the Kastania Overcrossing
  • An additional full closure is planned for northbound and southbound U.S. 101 on Friday night, December 20 to remove falsework from the Kastania Overcrossing, just south of the Petaluma Boulevard South interchange.
  • Northbound U.S. 101 will be closed at the Kastania Overcrossing Friday night, December 20, from 11:59 p.m. to 7 a.m. Detour: Traffic will exit at a temporary off-ramp to Petaluma Boulevard South and return to northbound U.S. 101 at the Petaluma Boulevard South on-ramp.
  • Southbound U.S. 101 will be closed Friday, December 20, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Detour: Take SR 116/Lakeville Highway to SR 37 and continue to southbound U.S. 101.

U.S. 101 / State Route 116 Construction in Petaluma Full Freeway Closures Scheduled at U.S. 101 Petaluma Boulevard S. Interchange

Petaluma, Sonoma County – Caltrans has scheduled full freeway closures for U.S. 101 at the Petaluma Boulevard South interchange in Petaluma from Tuesday, September 24th through Friday, September 27th, to install falsework to begin construction of the new interchange. Falsework is a temporary structure that will support the components of a bridge during construction.

Caltrans has scheduled the following full freeway closures:

  • Northbound U.S. 101 will be closed Tuesday night, September 24th, and Wednesday night, September 25th, from 11:59 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • Detour: Follow construction detour signs. During this closure, Caltrans will temporarily reopen the former Petaluma Boulevard South off-ramp. Motorists will continue on Petaluma Boulevard South to the northbound Petaluma Boulevard South on-ramp and return to the freeway.

  • Southbound U.S. 101 will be closed Thursday night, September 26th, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., and Friday night, September 27th, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
    • Detour: Exit at State Route (SR) 116, turn left on Lakeville Highway, continue to SR 37, turn right, and continue to U.S. 101.

Caltrans to Close Eastbound State Route 116 for Two Days

Petaluma, Sonoma County – Caltrans is planning to begin pile-driving in the median of State Route 116 at the U.S. 101 interchange and has scheduled a full-closure of eastbound SR 116 beginning Saturday morning, June 8, at 6 a.m. and continuing until 1 a.m. Monday morning, June 10. Detour: During this closure, traffic should detour to Caulfield Lane and S. McDowell Boulevard and then return to SR 116/Lakeville Highway.

Eastbound State Route 116 will remain closed during this time due to staging of equipment. Residents and businesses near the interchange may notice increased noise. However, pile-driving will only occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. No pile-driving will take place between 11 p.m. Saturday night and 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

Note: If work is not completed June 8 – 10, it will resume the following weekend, June 15 – 17, at the same hours. Please drive cautiously through the construction zone and leave a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.  “Slow for the Cone Zone.”

Sonoma County – Here are the planned Caltrans lane closures in Sonoma County for the week of February 25. All closures are weather dependent and subject to change.


Highway 1

One-way traffic control between Fort Ross Road and Meyers Grade Road.


U.S. Route 101

Monday to Friday one lane closed from Fulton onramp to Windsor River Road 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Monday to Thursday one lane closed from Fulton onramp to Windsor River Road 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Monday to Thursday two lanes closed from Fulton onramp to Windsor River Road 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Friday one lane closed between Fulton onramp and Windsor River Road 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. with two lanes closed from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

Saturday one lane closed between Fulton onramp and Windsor River Road from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Saturday two lanes closed from Fulton onramp to Windsor River Road from 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Sunday one lane closed from Fulton onramp to Windsor River Road from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Two lanes closed from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
