o The significant elevation changes of the highway at this location required a long-term closure to construct the new on-ramp.
o Construction has been ongoing despite unfavorable weather, and significant progress has been made placing and compacting the earthen fill that will support the new on-ramp.
o While an exact date for the re-opening of the ramp cannot be determined at this time, Caltrans expects the remaining work to take three to four more weeks to complete, barring any major storm events in the mean time.
o Caltrans recognizes the inconvenience of this long-term closure and appreciates the patience and understanding of the community during construction.
• Detour: During the long term northbound on-ramp closure, take Petaluma Boulevard South, turn right on D Street, then turn right on Lakeville Street, and continue to northbound U.S. 101.

State Route 1-Between Muir Woods and Mill Valley-Marin Co.-Closure Update-January 9

State of California • Department of Transportation

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

Date: January 9, 2015
District: 4 - Oakland
Contact: Stephen Williams
Phone: (510) 286-6195

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

State Route 1 Between Muir Woods and Mill Valley

• Marin County –Caltrans continues the road closure of Highway 1 in both directions between Muir Woods and Mill Valley. Caltrans cautions motorists, cyclists and pedestrians that the roadway is closed for safety reasons. Use the approved detour route and do not travel beyond barricades into closed area. Construction materials are being delivered, mobilization of heavy equipment has begun, and work will begin Monday, January 12, and continue from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, until the roadway is reopened.

Travelers should be aware that:

• Highway 1 has been closed to the public due to unsafe conditions—while the asphalt remains in-tact in the northbound direction, geotechnical engineers have determined that the fill material below the roadway is unstable and may collapse at any time. Caltrans asks that cyclists and pedestrians heed the “Road Closed” signs and follow the established detour until the roadway is repaired.
• The Panoramic Highway from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach is the established detour for this closure. The community and businesses at Muir Beach remain open and can be accessed via southbound Hwy 1 from Panoramic Highway.
• The repair will require construction of a soldier-pile retaining wall—this consists of a series of shafts drilled into the ground along the length of the wall, then steel beams are placed into the shafts and are backfilled with concrete. Timber-lagging is installed between the steel beams to create a retaining wall. The wall is then backfilled with soils or aggregate. The final step is repaving of the roadway.

Please drive cautiously through the detour route, watch for heavy construction equipment and leave a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you, and “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
