U.S. 101 Petaluma River Bridge Construction Project
Construction Update for Scheduled Ramp and Road Closures
Petaluma, Sonoma County – Caltrans has scheduled ramp and road closures for U.S. 101 construction projects at the Petaluma River and Lakeville Highway bridges.
State Route 116/Lakeville Highway
• State Route 116/Lakeville Highway will be fully closed at U.S. 101 on Tuesday night, January 27, Wednesday night, January 28, and Thursday night, January 29.
o Eastbound SR 116 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Detour: take Caulfield Lane to South McDowell Boulevard and return to SR 116.
o Westbound SR 116 will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Detour: Take South McDowell Boulevard to Caulfield Lane and return to Lakeville Street.
Closure of Petaluma Boulevard South and the Northbound Off-Ramp to Petaluma Boulevard South
• Demolition continues for the former northbound bridge over the Petaluma River. On Sunday, February 1, from 4 a.m. until 11:59 p.m., Caltrans will close Petaluma Boulevard South at the Petaluma River Bridge for demolition activities.
o Petaluma Boulevard South at U.S. 101 will be closed from 4 a.m. until 11:59 p.m.
o The northbound U.S. 101 off-ramp to Petaluma Boulevard South will also be closed.
o Detour 1: Northbound U.S. 101 traffic that usually exits at Petaluma Boulevard will be diverted to the next exit at State Route 116/Lakeville Highway.
o Detour 2: Residents who live or work on the east side of the freeway or on Kastania Road can exit at State Route 116/Lakeville Highway, take southbound U.S. 101, and exit at Petaluma Boulevard South to access their residence or business.
o Detour 3: During the closure of Petaluma Boulevard South, local residents and businesses who want to travel north on U.S. 101 can take the southbound U.S. 101 on-ramp from Petaluma Boulevard South, travel to the Redwood Landfill, and return to northbound U.S. 101.
These closures depend on weather conditions and will be rescheduled if necessary. Please drive cautiously through the construction zone, leave a safe traveling distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you, and Slow for the Cone Zone. The California Highway Patrol will be on site during closures.
Opening of the Northbound On-Ramp from Petaluma Blvd. South
• When northbound traffic was shifted to the median, the northbound on-ramp from Petaluma Boulevard South was closed to facilitate construction of new northbound lanes and the new northbound on-ramp from Petaluma Boulevard South.
o The significant elevation changes of the highway at this location required a long-term closure to construct the new on-ramp.
o Construction has been ongoing despite unfavorable weather, and significant progress has been made placing and compacting the earthen fill that will support the new on-ramp.
o While an exact date for the re-opening of the ramp cannot be determined at this time, Caltrans expects the remaining work to take three to four more weeks to complete, barring any major storm events in the mean time.
o Caltrans recognizes the inconvenience of this long-term closure and appreciates the patience and understanding of the community during construction.
• Detour: During the long term northbound on-ramp closure, take Petaluma Boulevard South, turn right on D Street, then turn right on Lakeville Street, and continue to northbound U.S. 101.
