MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS COMING TO SOLANO
COUNTY INTERCHANGE LINKING BAY AREA, SACRAMENTO, AND NAPA VALLEY
SOLANO COUNTY – Caltrans,
the Solano Transportation Authority (STA), and the Metropolitan Transportation
Commission broke ground today on a major project that aims to reduce congestion
and improve safety for more than 150,000 motorists who travel through the
Interstate 80/Interstate 680/State Route 12 interchange daily.
“Truckers, businesses, and motorists will all benefit from
this project. It’s a winning combination for all,” said Caltrans Director
Malcolm Dougherty. “This investment in our infrastructure strengthens the
economy and helps improves the quality of life in Northern California.”
During the
first phase of a seven-phase project, a new Green Valley Road overcrossing will
be constructed above I-80 about 200 feet east of the existing overcrossing. The
new overcrossing will have twice the number of lanes (4) as the existing
overcrossing (2), along with a new on ramp to westbound I-80/SR-12. The
connector ramp from westbound I-80 to SR-12 also will be widened from one lane
to two lanes.
This first
round of improvements will cost about $65 million and could be completed by
summer 2016. The project received $15 million from Proposition 1B, a 2006
voter-approved transportation bond. To date, more than $17 billion in
Proposition 1B funds have been used statewide for transportation purposes.
The remaining
six phases will be constructed and completed as funding becomes available. Improvements
in the upcoming phases will include:
·
New interchange at Red Top Road and I-680
·
New westbound connector ramp from westbound
I-80 to southbound I-680
·
Realignment of I-680 between I-80 and the
Lopes Road exit in Cordelia
·
Realignment of the connector ramp from SR-12
to eastbound I-80
·
New entrance/exit ramps
·
The extension of some local streets leading
to I-80 and SR-12
“Collectively,
these improvements will ease congestion, reduce cut-through traffic on local
streets, and enhance safety by streamlining connections for motorists transitioning
between the three major state routes linking the Bay Area, Sacramento, and the
Napa Valley,” said Caltrans District 4 Director Bijan Sartipi.
The
upgrades at the I-80/680/SR-12 interchange are part of an ongoing effort to
improve the transportation infrastructure in Solano, Sonoma and Napa counties. Last
July, a new $100 million truck complex opened along Interstate 80 near
Fairfield in Solano County. The state-of-the-art facility fast-tracks inspections
for more than two million trucks annually that travel from the Port of Oakland
on I-80 through Northern California. Several miles of SR-12 in Napa County also
were widened last year to ease traffic backups, and additional miles of the
highway are now being expanded in Sonoma County.
