FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Caltrans to Activate Ramp Meters on Interstate 680
Santa Clara County
SANTA CLARA COUNTY — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in partnership with Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will activate 20 on-ramp meters on Interstate 680 between U.S. 101 / I-680 separation in San Jose and Scott Creek Road undercrossing in Alameda County. The implementation of ramp metering systems is an effective traffic management strategy to improve vehicle on-ramp merging safety, reduce travel time, and improve the overall mobility of motorists traveling through the corridor during peak commute hours.
Metering lights in the southbound direction will be activated for the p.m. peak commute hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18. During this time, the lights will be set to solid green for one week then begin metering on August 25 during the p.m. peak hours.
Metering lights in the northbound direction will be activated for the a.m. peak commute hours from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on August 25. During this time, the lights will be set to solid green for one week then begin metering on September 1 during the a.m. peak hours.
Newly activated ramp locations could experience delays during the first few days. Caltrans will monitor the metered on-ramps and make adjustments as we fine-tune the metering operations. The ramp metering information line phone number is 510-286-4531.

The northbound SR-29 traffic lane and southbound SR-29 traffic lane will remain open. However, motorists may encounter delays while flaggers intermittently slow traffic for local access at various locations during the temporary traffic shift.
All work is weather permitting. Motorists should drive with caution, watch for flaggers, and expect delays.
