CALTRANS LITTER CLEAN-UP AND ENFORCEMENT DAY
Thursday,December 06, 2012 Caltrans Partners With CHP

District 4 (Oakland) – Caltrans and the CHP will join forces in a maximum effort against highway litter this Thursday, December 06, 2012.

Caltrans maintenance crews throughout the nine Bay Area counties will focus their efforts throughout the day on cleaning up litter left alongside the highways. Caltrans employees will be at various locations around the region.

This fiscal year, Caltrans District 4 spent almost $22 million in District 4 to pick up litter and debris, clean-up homeless camps, and sweep freeways.

The California Highway Patrol will also focus on litter law enforcement on Thursday. The focus will be the greatest in the Inspection Facilities. Patrolling units will also look closely at vehicle cargo containment and littering violations.

Litter is not only unpleasant to look at, is also a threat to the safety of motorists. In addition, litter often plugs storm drains during heavy rains, causing flooded roads and traffic delays.

Contact Adam Priest at (510) 286-5543 or Bob Haus at (510) 286-5576 for interviews.
