Real McCoy II Ferry Overnight Closure

For Regular Preventive Maintenance Thursday, March 20th

SOLANO COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will temporarily suspend service of the Real McCoy II Ferry to conduct regular preventive maintenance starting Thursday, March 20th at 10 p.m.

The Real McCoy II will be taken out of service Thursday, March 20th at 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. on Friday, March 21^st. All work is weather permitting.    

The Real McCoy II also known as the Cache Slough Ferry, provides regular service on State Route 84 between Ryer Island and the city of Rio Vista in Solano County.

Real McCoy II Ferry Detour

During this service interruption, motorists are advised to use Highway 160 and the J-Mack Ferry along Highway 220.

Since cars need friction to travel on highways, hows does Caltrans figure out what the right amount of friction would be for a road?

Caltrans conducts pavement skid testing to determine how rough the pavement should be.  As stated previously, generally the minimum roadway coefficient of friction is 0.30.  Caltrans would consider increasing the pavement roughness at locations where increased pavement traction can help reduce the number of accidents.  #caltransanswers

POSEY TUBE CLOSURE SCHEDULED TONIGHT

ALAMEDA COUNTY – The Posey Tube will be closed tonight, Wednesday, January 22, 2014, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. (Thursday morning) as crews safely conduct median barrier construction activities.

DETOUR ROUTE:  Motorists traveling from Alameda should head south on Atlantic Avenue to Buena Vista Ave., turn left on Park Street, heading east toward 29^th Ave., toward Oakland. Motorists traveling from Oakland can use the Webster Tube.

Does Caltrans have a formula for determining how smooth or rough to make a road surface?

Caltrans does not use a formula, but we use an equipment that measures the coefficient of friction.  Here is a weblink for California Test Method 342 on measuring a roadway’s coefficient of friction.

Does Caltrans design road surfaces to control how fast cars can travel on them?

No, we do not design roadway surface to control how fast cars can travel. What controls how fast cars can travel is the roadway’s design alignment such as the roadway’s radius of curvature and how much the cross slope of the curve is superelevated (banked).  Keep in mind that wet weather and sight distance also control how fast vehicles can travel.  We post speed limit signs (white signs) for speed enforcement and warning speed and/or condition signs (yellow signs) to alert motorists in advance.

Weekly Lane Closures for the San Mateo County Route 82

Smart Corridor Project

                         

San Mateo County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has scheduled the following lane closures for the week of July 15, 2013, through July 19,       2013 as part of the Route 82 (El Camino Real) Smart Corridor project.

Caltrans crews will install an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) system that provides traffic management tools to manage traffic on local streets and State Route 82. Improvements include, a fiber optic communication system, interconnection of local and State traffic signals, trailblazer signs, message signs, vehicle detection systems and fixed cameras. This system will run from the City of San Bruno to Redwood City.

Partners include: (C/CAG) City and County of Associated Governments of San Mateo County, US Department of Transportation-Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the following Cities, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City.

Construction is expected to be completed in October, 2013. (Weather Permitting)

Embarcadero/Oregon Expressway and University Ramp Closures in Palo Alto

Embarcadero/Oregon Expressway and University Ramp Closures in Palo Alto

San Mateo County - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will continue to close the eastbound and westbound Embarcadero/Oregon Expressway on-ramp to northbound Route 101 and the eastbound and westbound University on-ramp to southbound Route 101 as needed until October 19, 2012. These closures are necessary as part of the 101 Auxiliary Lane Widening Project from University Avenue to Embarcadero Road in Palo Alto.

Work being performed Monday through Friday when closed will begin at 9:00 p.m. through 5:00 a.m. the following day. 

Detour for eastbound/westbound University Avenue to southbound 101:

Traffic will be detoured to eastbound Middlefield Road, to eastbound Embarcadero Road, back to southbound 101.  

Detour for eastbound/westbound Embarcadero Road/Oregon Expressway to northbound 101:

Traffic will be detoured to northbound East Bayshore Road, to northbound Donohoe Street, back to northbound 101.

This project is scheduled for completion, end of October 2012, or early November 2012.

Detour signs and Changeable Message Signs will be posted to assist motorists during this ramp closure. Please drive cautiously when approaching the construction area.

State Route 121

One way traffic control on Highway 121 from Tolay Creek to Yellow Creek from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Monday through Friday.

One way traffic control on Highway 12/Broadway where Highway 12 merges into State Route 121 to just east of eighth street.

State Route 128

One way traffic control on the Geyserville Bridge from 7:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Northbound and Southbound between Rohnert Park Expressway and Santa Rosa Avenue, one lane closed from 11:00 pm to 5:00 am Monday through Friday.

Northbound and Southbound between Corona Road and the Rohnert Park Expressway from 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday through Friday with various lanes and ramps closed.

Southbound 101 in the vicinity of the Railroad Avenue overcrossing, beginning Friday, August 24, 2012 to Monday, August 27, 2012.  Friday’s hours are 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. one lane closed, 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. two lanes closed. Saturday, 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. one lane closed. 10:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. two lanes closed. Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. one lane closed. 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. two lanes closed.

Northbound and Southbound between Rohnert Park Expressway and Santa Rosa Avenue, various lanes and ramps closed between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

Southbound 101, between the Highway 128 on ramp and the Citrus Fair off ramp, #2 lane closed 24/7 until October.

The section of Commerce Boulevard that runs beneath 101 in Rohnert Park is closed until mid to late August.

State Route 1

Roadway Resurfacing on Shoreline Highway in Marin County

August 16, 2012
Starting tomorrow morning, Friday, August 17, Caltrans will begin repairing damaged sections of the roadway surface on Highway 1 (Shoreline Highway) between Flamingo and West California. The work will performed during daytime hours for a period of approximately two and one half weeks. This work is being performed during the daytime to mitigate the potential noise impacts of the machinery used to remove the damaged roadway surface.

There will be one-lane traffic control during this work. Flaggers will assist with traffic control.

Around August 27, the Caltrans' contractors will begin to resurface the roadway from Highway 101 to Stinson Beach with a new wearing course of asphalt that will extend the life of the heavily traveled roadway. The resurfacing activity will take place overnight. However, the operations will move down the roadway relatively quickly at a rate of approximately 2 miles per night. You may be disrupted for a portion of one or two nights as the equipment passes by.
