FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

U.S. Route 101 in San Mateo County Ramp Meters to go Green November 4, 2014
Watch For New Signals at On-Ramps

San Mateo County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will activate northbound ramp metering on U.S. Route 101 in San Mateo County beginning November 4, 2014.

What is Ramp Metering?
Ramp metering is a traffic management strategy using traffic signals and accompanying equipment and techniques to improve flow on the freeway system. It is intended to improve the safety of vehicle merging.

Motorists at newly activated ramp locations may experience operational delays during the first few days of operation. Caltrans staff will monitor the metered locations and make adjustments, and then fine tune the metering operations.

Northbound Activation
Meters at 18 on-ramps will be activated on northbound U.S. 101 between U.S. Route 92 in San Mateo and the San Mateo/San Francisco County line.
 Beginning Tuesday, November 4, 2014, on-ramp meters will be set to solid green during commute times to alert drivers to the new driving condition.
 On Wednesday, November 12, 2014 on-ramp meters will start cycling through red and green during Northbound PM peak time from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
 On Tuesday, November 18 2014, ramp meters will start cycling during Northbound AM peak time from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Drivers entering U.S. Route 101 where on-ramp meters are activated should stop at red and wait until the metering light turns green to enter U.S. Route 101. Caltrans will monitor traffic conditions and operate ramp meters as appropriate.

Additional Information: All on-ramps will operate at “1 car per green” except for two
freeway to freeway connector ramps which will meter and operate at “2 cars per green”.

The two freeway connectors are the Westbound State Route 92 to Northbound U.S
Route 101 Connector, and Eastbound I-380 to Northbound U.S. Route 101 Connector.

First Phase of Key Commuter Corridor Widening Project Complete Wider State Route 84 Eases Local and Regional Congestion

ALAMEDA COUNTY – Caltrans, the city of Livermore and the Alameda County Transportation Commission today celebrated the completion of the first phase of the State Route 84 widening project that will ease congestion on the important commuter artery between Interstates 680 and 580.

“Caltrans is working to improve transportation infrastructure across California, which benefits everyone due to reduced travel time, cost and pollution,” said Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty. “With this project, the public can see their taxpayer dollars being put to good use and can anticipate less time stuck in traffic.”

The $36.5 million project widened sections of State Route 84 in Livermore from two to four lanes north of Concannon Boulevard to Stanley Boulevard and from four to six lanes from Stanley Boulevard to Jack London Boulevard. State Route 84 plays a major role for local commuters within the region, serving as a regional connection between I-680 and I-580, and the new additional capacity will alleviate some of the existing congestion along the route. The additional lanes also aim to improve local traffic circulation by attracting traffic currently using local streets back onto SR-84.

“Caltrans and the Alameda County Transportation Commission have partnered to provide congestion relief to motorists who travel along State Route 84 and to the community of Livermore,” said Bijan Sartipi, Caltrans District 4 Director. “Providing congestion relief and improving the quality of life is what our partnership is all about.”

The second phase of the project, just south of the first, will involve widening from two lanes to four on a 2.4 mile section of SR-84 from Concannon Boulevard to Ruby Hill Drive. Construction is scheduled to begin fall 2015 and continue through 2017.

“This project is a great example of inter-agency collaboration and coordination that delivers key transportation projects to reduce congestion and improve mobility in the Tri-Valley and throughout Alameda County,” said Supervisor Scott Haggerty, Chair of the Alameda County Transportation Commission. “Alameda CTC partnered with Caltrans and the City of Livermore to manage this project, which was funded by Alameda County’s Measure B sales tax funds as well as state bond funds and local contributions.”

Over 40 percent of the $36.5 million project’s funding – $16 million – comes from
Proposition 1B, the 2006 voter-approved transportation bond. Since its passage, more
than $17 billion in Proposition 1B funds have been put to work statewide for
transportation purposes.
