Interstate 280 Bridge Hinge Replacement Project Road Closure Planned for Labor Day Weekend

Interstate 280 Bridge Hinge Replacement Project
Road Closure Planned for Labor Day Weekend

San Francisco – In two weeks the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close northbound Interstate 280 from the U.S. 101/I-280 interchange to downtown San Francisco. The Labor Day weekend closure will begin Thursday, August 28 at 2 p.m. and continue until Tuesday, September 2, at 5 a.m. This closure is necessary to replace two bridge hinges on northbound I-280. The bridge hinges are located near Cesar Chavez Street.

The California Department of Transportation expects that there will be significant travel delay during this northbound closure. Alternate routes should be taken when possible.

Detour: Northbound Interstate 280 traffic will detour to U.S. 101. When travelling during the closure it is strongly advised to call 511 or check with 511.org and to use public transportation such as BART, Caltrain, MUNI, and SamTrans.

Full northbound closure Begins: 2 p.m. Thursday, August 28
Full northbound closure Ends: 5 a.m., Tuesday morning, September 2.

Northbound on-ramp closures include:
  • Alemany Boulevard on-ramp
  • U.S. 101 connector to northbound Interstate 280
  • Indiana Street/25th Street on-ramp
  • 18th Street on-ramp

Southbound I-280 will remain open during this closure

104-Hours (4 Days-8-Hours) Road Closure Begins in Two Days
Significant Travel Delay Expected for July 4

San Francisco – In two days the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will close northbound Interstate 280 from the U.S. 101/I-280 interchange to downtown San Francisco. The Fourth of July Holiday closure will begin Wednesday at 9 p.m. and continue until Monday at 5 a.m.

The California Department of Transportation expects that there will be significant travel delay during this northbound closure, and that motorists should in particular expect additional travel time on Friday, July 4. Alternate routes should be taken when possible.

Detour: Northbound Interstate 280 traffic will detour to U.S. 101. When travelling during the closure it is strongly advised to call 511 or check with 511.org and to use public transportation such as BART, Caltrain, MUNI, and SamTrans.

Full northbound closure Ends: 5 a.m., Monday morning, July 7.

Interstate 280 Bridge Hinge Replacement Project
104-Hours (4 Days-8-Hours) Road Closure Planned for Fourth of July Holiday Weekend

San Francisco –Caltrans has activated portable changeable message signs (CMS) for the Interstate 280 Bridge Hinge Replacement Project.  The signs notify motorists of upcoming ramp and freeway closures in San Francisco. During two extended-holiday weekends, the California Department of Transportation will close northbound I-280 in order to replace three bridge hinges.

The first closure is scheduled for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Northbound I-280 will be fully closed from the U.S. 101/Interstate 280 interchange to downtown San Francisco.

Full northbound closure Begins: 9 p.m. Wednesday evening, July 2
Full nouthbound closure Ends: 5 a.m., Monday morning, July 7.

Northbound on-ramp closures include:
  • U.S. 101 connector to northbound Interstate 280
  • Indiana Street/25th Street on-ramp
  • 18th Street on-ramp

Northbound off-ramp closures include:
  • Cesar Chavez Street off-ramp
  • Mariposa Street off-ramp
  • 6th Street off-ramp
  • King Street off-ramp

This closure is necessary in order to replace one bridge hinge on southbound I-280. Additional closures are planned for the Fourth of July and Labor Day holiday weekends to replace bridge hinges on northbound I-280.

The first closure is scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend. Southbound I-280 will be fully closed between downtown San Francisco and the Pennsylvania Avenue on-ramp.

Full southbound closure Begins: 9 p.m. Thursday evening, May 22
Full southbound closure Ends: 5 a.m., Tuesday morning, May 27.

Southbound on-ramp closures include:
  • Mariposa Street/18th Street on-ramp
  • 6th Street/Brannan on-ramp
  • King Street on-ramp

Detour: In general, southbound I- 280 traffic will detour to U.S. 101. Mariposa Street/ 18th Street traffic can also detour to the southbound I-280 Pennsylvania Avenue on-ramp.

Note: northbound I-280 will remain open over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend.

Construction Begins for Interstate 280 Bridge Hinge Replacement Project

San Francisco – Construction has started for a bridge hinge replacement project on Interstate 280 near Cesar Chavez Street.  Businesses and residents may notice construction signs being installed and see construction taking place beneath Interstate 280. During three extended-holiday weekends, the California Department of will close northbound or southbound I-280 in order to replace one bridge hinge on southbound I-280 and three bridge hinges on northbound I-280.

The first closure is scheduled for the Memorial Day weekend. Southbound I-280 will be closed between 5th Street in downtown San Francisco and the U.S. 101 interchange. The closure will begin 9 p.m. Thursday evening, May 22, and continue until 5 a.m., Tuesday morning, May 27. During this extensive closure, the southbound on-ramps from Mariposa Street/18th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue will also be closed. Note: northbound I-280 will remain open during the full southbound closure.

Additional closures for are planned over the 4th of July and Labor Day holiday weekends.

1in Marin County because of the high tide.
Northbound motorist need to take the Seminary Drive exit and re-enter at the southbound 101 to access Highway 1

Westbound State Route 37 to Northbound U.S. 101 Ramp

to Be Closed for Paving October 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.


Marin County – Tomorrow, Thursday, October 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Caltrans will close the westbound State Route 37 on-ramp to northbound U.S. 101 for paving.  The on-ramp from South Novato Boulevard and the right lane of northbound U.S. 101 will also be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Detour for Westbound SR 37: Take Lakeville Highway to U.S. 101, or exit at Atherton Avenue and continue to northbound U.S. 101.

Detour for Novato Boulevard: Travel north on Novato Boulevard, right on Rowland Boulevard, and continue to northbound U.S. 101.

Please remember to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”
