“Don’t Trash California”

Caltrans and CHP increase awareness on eve of spring cleaning season

(OAKLAND)- Caltrans and the CHP are working to increase awareness of litter clean-up and enforcement efforts on Wednesday, March 19th, 2014, the eve of this year’s official start of springtime.

And with the spring equinox and Earth Day events fast approaching, highway message signs throughout the Bay Area will remind everyone to: “Don’t Trash California”.

As part of Wednesday’s joint agency effort, Caltrans maintenance crews throughout the Bay Area will focus on cleaning-up litter left alongside highways. CHP will focus on vehicle enforcement and reminds drivers that law enforcement will be watching for litter violations.

Litter affects everyone’s safety and costs taxpayers a lot of money. In 2012, Caltrans spent about $50 million statewide cleaning up litter and collecting enough trash to fill more than 8,000 garbage trucks.

During Wednesday’s event, media ride-along opportunities are available with CHP and Caltrans crews at these and other litter pick-up locations between 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.:

San Jose-Los Gatos
Northbound and Southbound Highway 101 between McKee Road and Alum Rock, San Jose

Litter Clean-Up and Enforcement Day started as a conversation more than 10 years ago between Caltrans, CHP and local cities to raise awareness and help keep our highways clean throughout the Bay Area.

2013 marked the 10th anniversary year of the Litter Clean-Up event.
