The project will construct express lanes in both directions between Interstate 380 in San Bruno and Whipple Avenue in Redwood City, a distance of 16 miles. At Whipple Avenue, the new express lanes will connect to an eight-mile carpool lane that extends to San Antonio Road in Palo Alto. As part of the project, the carpool lanes will be converted into express lanes, creating two 22-mile express lanes between northern San Mateo County and Silicon Valley.
Construction is scheduled to begin in summer of 2019 and project completion is scheduled for late 2022.
The Sam Mateo Highway 101 Express Lanes Project will build a 16-mile express lane in each direction (red) that will connect with existing carpool lane (blue), which, in turn, will be converted to express lanes, creating two 22-mile long express lanes.
