HAWK / Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons
Caltrans Activates System for First Time in North Bay
Starts, Tuesday, February 27, 2018
SOLANO COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is scheduled to activate new pedestrian hybrid beacons also known as the HAWK System or the High Intensity Activated Crosswalk System at four intersections on State Route 29 (SR-29) / Sonoma Boulevard in Downtown Vallejo on Tuesday, February 27, 2018.
These overhead pedestrian warning lights will be the first of their kind in the North Bay.
Project Benefits
The new Beacons were installed to increase safety at busy intersections when pedestrians are present. When the system is off, traffic can flow freely when no pedestrians are present.
How do the beacons work?
Pedestrians press a button before entering a crosswalk which activates the beacon. It then flashes yellow and turns solid yellow. The beacon then turns solid red which alerts motorists to stop. Unlike signal lights, beacons do not go green. Instead, after having turned red, they flash red, then go dark after enough time for pedestrians cross. This allows motorists to proceed when no pedestrians are present.
Brighter LED Street Lights and Repainted Crosswalks
As part of the project, Caltrans also installed new brighter LED street lights at 10 intersections along 2-miles of SR-29 between Illinois and Cherry Streets. Crews also repainted several crosswalks.

Closed Until Further Notice
SOLANO COUNTY– The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has suspended service of the Real McCoy Ferry on State Route 84 (SR-84) until further notice to perform emergency repairs to the boat’s propulsion system. The closure started the night of Sunday, February 25, 2018.
Caltrans will make an announcement once repairs are completed.
The Real McCoy also known as the Cache Slough Ferry, provides regular service on SR-84 between Ryer Island and the City of Rio Vista in Solano County.
The delta region ferry normally runs scheduled crossings every 20 minutes, on the hour, 20 minutes after the hour, and 40 minutes after the hour.
Real McCoy Ferry Detour
During the temporary service interruption of the Real McCoy, motorists are advised to use the J-Mack Ferry on State Route 220 or the Miner Slough Bridge on State Route 84 to travel between Ryer Island and communities in Sacramento and Solano counties.

Highway 12 Rio Vista Bridge Paint Project Begins Tonight

SACRAMENTO and SOLANO COUNTIES – Caltrans is alerting motorists that overnight lane closures on the State Highway 12 Rio Vista Bridge in the Delta are scheduled to begin tonight, February 15.
Motorists should allow additional travel time in the area as crews begin work on a $37.1 million painting project aimed at preserving the structure over the Sacramento River in Sacramento and Solano counties.
The drawbridge will remain open to traffic throughout the project. However, one of the two lanes on the bridge will be closed during the overnight hours on weekdays and some weekends to accommodate crews. Bicycle and pedestrian access will remain open. Motorists can expect delays because of the one-way traffic controls.
The project is lengthy because there will be no complete closures of the bridge and work will be limited to nighttime into the early morning during the week with some weekends as needed. Completion is expected by winter 2020. For updated project information go to http://www.riovistabridge.com.
Daily Schedule
From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday. The weekend schedule (as needed) is from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday and from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday. (The lane restrictions will not apply for the Presidents Day holiday on Monday, February 19).
One-Way Traffic Controls
Even though no full-highway closures are scheduled, motorists will experience delays as crews work. Intermittent one-way traffic control with flaggers will be in effect.
During the one-way traffic controls, crews will alternate traffic in the eastbound and westbound directions on the bridge. This will allow one lane on the bridge to remain open during the work.
The California Highway Patrol will be at the worksite enforcing the traffic management by Caltrans. First responder vehicles on emergency calls will have priority access.
Boat and Ship Traffic
For mariner traffic, the bridge will open only during specified times or in a maritime emergency. Ship captains and boaters must contact the U. S. Full Overnight Highway Closures
During Bridge Work

Expect Delays
SOLANO COUNTY— The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is continuing construction of the new Midway Road Bridge above eastbound and westbound Interstate-80
(I-80). The bridge is located in rural Solano County just east of Downtown Vacaville.
Starting Saturday, February 10, 2018, Caltrans and its contractor are scheduled to remove the existing bridge falsework over I-80.
I-80 Overnight Closures and Detours-February 10 and February 11, 2018
To ensure worker and public safety during the work, a full highway closure will be in effect on eastbound and westbound I-80 at Midway Road starting Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 PM until Sunday, February 11 at 8:00 AM.
Motorists traveling on eastbound I-80 at Midway Road will have a short detour onto adjacent auxiliary lanes and back onto eastbound I-80.
Motorists traveling on westbound I-80 at Midway Road will be taken off I-80 at Midway Road, then detoured southbound onto North Meridian Street, then re-enter westbound I-80 from North Meridian.
Detour signs will be posted. CHP will help direct motorists.
Please allow for extra time and expect delays. All work is weather dependent.
Midway Bridge Long-Term Closure
The Midway Bridge will remain CLOSED until the new Midway Bridge is completed as early as spring 2018. Local detours remain in effect.
Project Benefits
The project will demolish and rebuild the Midway Road Bridge. The work seismically retrofits the bridge and brings it up to the latest seismic safety standards.
Midway Road Bridge Closure-Detour Routes
During the construction of the new Midway Road Bridge, the Meridian Road Bridge above I-80 and just west of the Midway Road Bridge will remain OPEN and serve as a general detour.

Full Overnight Highway Closures
During Bridge Work

Expect Delays
SOLANO COUNTY— The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is continuing construction of the new Midway Road Bridge above eastbound and westbound Interstate-80
(I-80). The bridge is located in rural Solano County just east of Downtown Vacaville.
Starting Saturday, February 10, 2018, Caltrans and its contractor are scheduled to remove the existing bridge falsework over I-80.
I-80 Overnight Closures and Detours-February 10 and February 11, 2018
To ensure worker and public safety during the work, a full highway closure will be in effect on eastbound and westbound I-80 at Midway Road starting Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 PM until Sunday, February 11 at 8:00 AM.
Motorists traveling on eastbound I-80 at Midway Road will have a short detour onto adjacent auxiliary lanes and back onto eastbound I-80.
Motorists traveling on westbound I-80 at Midway Road will be taken off I-80 at Midway Road, then detoured southbound onto North Meridian Street, then re-enter westbound I-80 from North Meridian.
Detour signs will be posted. CHP will help direct motorists.
Please allow for extra time and expect delays. All work is weather dependent.
Midway Bridge Long-Term Closure
The Midway Bridge will remain CLOSED until the new Midway Bridge is completed as early as spring 2018. Local detours remain in effect.
Project Benefits
The project will demolish and rebuild the Midway Road Bridge. The work seismically retrofits the bridge and brings it up to the latest seismic safety standards.
Midway Road Bridge Closure-Detour Routes
During the construction of the new Midway Road Bridge, the Meridian Road Bridge above I-80 and just west of the Midway Road Bridge will remain OPEN and serve as a general detour.
Construction Zone Activity
Residents and businesses near the Midway Bridge may temporarily experience increased construction noise.
