SR-37 Marin County Reopened- Following Flood Repairs and Improvements

State of California • Department of Transportation
NEWS RELEASE
__________________________________________________________
Date: February 22, 2017
District: 4 - Oakland
Contact: Bob Haus
Phone: (510) 286-5576

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

State Route 37-Marin County
Reopened
Following Flood Repairs and Improvements

Marin County – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced today it will reopen State Highway 37 in Marin County on February 23, 2017 by 5 a.m for the morning commute.

The 1,500-foot segment of the 4 lane freeway, located between State Route 101 and Atherton Avenue, has been either partially or fully closed due to the flooding caused by storms, heavy rain and king tides several times since the first week of January. Caltrans initiated an emergency contract that had a contractor work around the clock since February 14, 2017.

Construction crews have successfully regraded the freeway asphalt pavement to a higher profile, replaced the drainage system with larger drain pipes, installed a lateral support sheet pile wall, placed temporary pavement striping, installed median guardrails and a shoulder concrete barrier on the eastbound highway. “These measures will provide greater climate resiliency on this portion of highway 37,” said Caltrans District Director Bijan Sartipi.

During the next few months construction crews will continue median and shoulder work during off peak hours with lane closures to complete remaining drainage work, headwalls, pipe tidal gates, guardrail, bridge sealing, electrical work, pavement striping, and median or shoulder grading work as weather conditions improve.

“These improvements will not make the road flood proof, but they will ensure future flooding episodes are fewer in number and shorter in duration on this part of highway 37,” said Caltrans District Director Bijan Sartipi. “We thank everyone for their patience while we complete this project.”
