State Route 24 - Caldecott Tunnels
Mandatory Emergency Response Drill-Overnight Tunnel Closures
Start Friday, February 20 at 10:00 PM

ALAMEDA and CONTRA COSTA COUNTIES – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will conduct its annual mandatory emergency response drill at the State Route 24 (SR-24) – Caldecott Tunnel (Bore #4), Westbound, between Oakland and Orinda.

The mandatory four-hour emergency response drill begins Friday, February 20 at 10:00 PM and concludes Saturday, February 21 at 4:00 AM. The exercise is weather permitting. This drill was rescheduled from December 2014 to February 2015 due to weather.

For the safety of crews and the public, Bore 4 will be closed. Traffic will be redirected to Bore 3 during the drill. Bores 1 and 2 will remain open during the exercise.

Traffic control and message signs will be provided ahead of the tunnel bores to help direct motorists.

The mandatory emergency response drill will be a coordinated effort including the CHP, Oakland Fire Department, Moraga-Orinda Fire District, and Caltrans-Tunnels & Tubes Department Staff.

During this exercise, there will be fire simulation, crash simulation, and simulated smoke. Motorists should expect delays and plan for extra travel time.
